The 2026 Shanghai International Reinsurance Conference was held in Lin-gang Special Area from Oct 27 to 30, drawing a record number of reinsurance institutions, regulatory bodies, and experts from nearly 40 countries and regions.
New rules allowing insurers to invest income from cross-border reinsurance business overseas were unveiled at the opening ceremony. Under the program, domestic insurers and their branches can invest net income earned from cross-border reinsurance inward transactions in overseas markets, in line with relevant regulations.
This initiative is expected to diversify domestic insurers' options for managing investment horizons, balancing costs and returns, and hedging against exchange rate risks, while improving capital utilization and asset-liability management. It will also help Shanghai connect the two sides of the reinsurance business: global risk coverage and global asset allocation.
The first four participating institutions — PICC Property and Casualty, China Pacific Property Insurance, Ping An Property Insurance, and China Property & Casualty Reinsurance — launched the pilot along with three partner banks — Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Bank of China, and China Construction Bank — and Shanghai International Reinsurance Exchange.
