Shanghai Port kicked off the year with robust growth, fueled by record international container vessel traffic and enhanced rail-sea intermodal transport.
Yangshan Deep-Water Port, a major part of Shanghai Port located in Hangzhou Bay south of the city, processed a record 834 international mainline container vessel calls in January, marking a year-on-year increase of about 4.4 percent.
The growth was largely attributed to enhanced operational efficiency, notably a model that allows the simultaneous berthing and departure of multiple vessels along a limited shoreline, according to Liu Jianping, director of the command center at the Yangshan Port Maritime Safety Administration.
Refined traffic management also mitigated disruptions caused by severe weather in January, ensuring the smooth functioning of supply chains.
Meanwhile, rail-sea intermodal transportation at Luchaogang Railway Container Terminal continued its upward momentum, handling over 100,000 twenty-foot equivalent units by Feb 1, up more than 20 percent year-on-year.
The growth reflects closer coordination between China Railway Shanghai Group and Shanghai Port, reducing train dwell times both at the railway terminal and the port.
