The Shanghai System Integration Lab, an international science and technology innovation hub, was inaugurated on Dec 16 in the Zhangjiang Science City, Pudong New Area.
The launch coincided with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Switzerland.
The establishment of the lab was advanced by Benoit Dubuis, president of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences and dean of the Sino-Swiss Institute of Advanced Technology at Shanghai University, with support from the Pudong New Area government and Shanghai University.
The lab focuses on cutting-edge fields including biomedicine, advanced medical devices, and micro-nanoelectronics. By adopting Switzerland's mature proof of concept and technology transfer models, it aims to accelerate the crucial transition from scientific research to industry.
By drawing on resources from Swiss and other European corporations, the lab seeks to build a cross-border technology transfer mechanism, strengthen the bilateral flow of innovation resources, accelerate the localization of key European technologies in Shanghai, and attract international talent and entrepreneurship projects.
The lab is expected to support Pudong's high-level reform and Shanghai's development as an international science and technology innovation hub.
At the inauguration ceremony, Dubuis described the lab as a strategic collaboration that leverages the complementary strengths of China and Switzerland, serving as a vital bridge between research and industry in both countries.
Chinese ambassador to Switzerland Qian Minjian said in a video message that he hopes the lab will help foster an "innovative, cooperative, inclusive, and win-win" bilateral partnership, leading to more high-level Sino-Swiss collaborative projects in science and technology.
During the ceremony, the lab signed strategic cooperation agreements with several domestic and international partners, including the Shanghai Synthetic Biology Innovation Center and Switzerland's Health Valley, to deepen collaboration in technology validation, project incubation, and resource integration.
