Shanghai's 100,000-ton green methanol project has obtained ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS certifications for its entire process, encompassing raw material supply, methanol production, trade, storage, and bunkering.

The two certifications, ISCC EU for EU market compliance and ISCC PLUS for global recognition, confirm that Shanghai’s first locally produced green methanol meets stringent international sustainability standards. This achievement opens access to the European Union and other global markets.

The project is a collaboration among four State-owned enterprises, Shenergy Group, Shanghai Chengtou Group, Huayi Group, and Shanghai International Port Group, and represents the city’s first green methanol production facility.

It utilizes green biogas derived from wet waste, livestock manure, and other organic materials as feedstock, while the biomass-to-methanol approach is powered by wind-generated green electricity.

Compared with conventional fossil fuel-based methanol production, the project can achieve an 80 percent reduction in carbon emissions.

The dual accreditation also strengthens Shanghai Port’s competitiveness, reduces trade risks, and enables participation in carbon emission reduction trading schemes.

The facility is scheduled to begin operations later this year, with the first bunkering of green methanol scheduled before the Chinese New Year in 2026.
