Shanghai's Jing'an District is stepping up efforts to become a world-class international hub, posting impressive gains across the economy, trade and services over the past five years.

In 2024, Jing'an's gross domestic product (GDP) hit 336.99 billion yuan (US$47 billion), with per capita GDP climbing to 360,000 yuan, which is 1.5 times higher than in 2020. Budget revenue topped 30.22 billion yuan, placing the district among Shanghai's leaders.

Since 2021, Jing'an has opened 991 first stores, with landmark sites like "The Louis" drawing nationwide buzz. Retail sales now lead all central districts in Shanghai.

Besides, 85 companies have set up regional headquarters in Jing'an since 2021, bringing the total number to 162, 142 of which are regional headquarters of multinationals. Tax revenue from these headquarters operations has grown more than 11 percent annually.

Jing'an is also cementing its role as Shanghai's service powerhouse. The number of "Global Service Providers" has increased from 48 in 2020 to the current 103. They span human resources, consulting, law, advertising, and quality testing, and generate over 18 percent of citywide revenue, the highest share of any district.

Trade and commerce remain the backbone, accounting for a third of the local economy. Since 2021, merchandise sales have stayed above 1 trillion yuan annually. Offshore service outsourcing has nearly tripled to US$ 1.47 billion since 2020.

The downtown district is also attracting cutting-edge industries, hosting a third of Shanghai's core big data firms and operations of a third of the world's top 50 pharmaceutical companies. Between 2021 and 2024, Jing'an landed 1,122 foreign direct investment projects worth US$4.83 billion, outpacing the previous five years.
