Shanghai secures $3.68 billion in foreign investment

Reaffirming its role as a hub for foreign investment, Shanghai certified 30 multinational regional headquarters and 15 foreign-funded research and development centers at a high-profile ceremony held on July 11.

A total of 56 foreign investment projects were also secured during the ceremony, with a combined value of $3.68 billion. Of these, 33 deals were signed on site. The signings covered key sectors including bio-pharmaceuticals, intelligent manufacturing, consumer goods, finance, as well as the digital and green economies.

The newly certified firms include seven Fortune Global 500 companies, five China or broader regional headquarters, and one divisional headquarters. Most align closely with Shanghai's strategic priorities for growth.

From January to May, Shanghai welcomed nearly 2,500 new foreign-invested enterprises, with actual utilized foreign capital surpassing $7.6 billion. The city now hosts 1,042 multinational regional headquarters and 605 foreign R&D centers, more than any other city in the Chinese mainland.

Shanghai has pledged continued support for foreign enterprises, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining a world-class, market-driven, transparent, and predictable business environment.

Certified multinationals in focus

Hager: The German smart solutions provider is ramping up investment in China's energy and intelligent manufacturing sectors, with plans to expand its R&D presence in Shanghai and utilize local engineering talent.

Scopely:  The US-based game company is developing a $100 million mobile game in Shanghai, having completed an initial capital injection of $22 million by the end of January. The company is also expanding its investments across the Chinese market.

Beiersdorf: The German skincare giant is investing $23 million to upgrade its Nivea smart factory in Shanghai, supporting new product development. An additional 100 million yuan ($13.95 million) has been allocated to expand the Chantecaille brand's offline presence in Shanghai and online growth across China.
