The top 50 best-selling cosmetics brands in China for 2025 were officially announced on July 1 at the China Perfume and Cosmetics Brands Development Conference, held in Shanghai's Fengxian district.

Drawn from actual consumer purchase data, the ranking showcases the performance of leading cosmetic brands. The announcement was made at the Oriental Beauty Valley, one of the city's key hubs for the cosmetics industry.

Together, these top 50 brands generated retail sales totaling 233.76 billion yuan ($32.61 billion), representing 21.7 percent of China's overall cosmetics market.

Among the top performers, L'Oréal Paris, Lancome, Estee Lauder, and Proya each surpassed annual retail sales of 10 billion yuan.

Regionally, Chinese brands represent the highest number of entries, with 22 of the top 50 brands originating from China. However, their combined sales made up only about 40 percent of the total revenue, indicating a competitiveness gap.

In contrast, twenty-one of the top 50 brands were established between 1900 and 1999 and are all international, collectively generating 113.42 billion yuan in retail sales, or 48.6 percent of the market.

Four of the listed brands are based in the Oriental Beauty Valley, underscoring the area's growing significance as a cosmetics industry hub.

Since its establishment in 2015, the valley has attracted nearly 4,000 beauty and health brands. In 2024, the industrial output of enterprises above designated size — enterprises with annual revenue of at least 20 million yuan — in the valley exceeded 56 billion yuan.

Cosmetics manufacturers based in the valley now account for 37 percent of Shanghai's total, contributing to 40 percent of the city's cosmetics market sales.

Shanghai remains the largest hub for cosmetics imports and exports in China. From January to May 2025, the total import and export value of cosmetics and personal care products at Shanghai port reached 25.32 billion yuan, making up 35.6 percent of the national total.
