The 2025 Shanghai Shopping Festival is coming to a close after two months of exciting retail activity.
Since the festival began on May 1, total bricks and mortar spending has reached 378.5 billion yuan ($52.83 billion), with an average daily spend of 6.76 billion yuan — a 10 percent increase compared with the same period last year, according to data released on June 27 by the Consumer Market Big Data Laboratory (Shanghai), which is affiliated with the Fudan Development Institute.
This year's festival focused on the shopping areas for the first time, featuring themed campaigns and special promotions such as discounts and coupons to pull in the customers.
As of June 25, seven districts — Pudong New Area, Huangpu, Jing'an, Xuhui, Changning, Yangpu and Minhang districts — had handed out shopping coupons covering major shopping areas such as Middle Huaihai Road, Yuyuan Garden, West Nanjing Road, Lujiazui and Xujiahui.
The coupons were accepted at nearly 100 shopping malls and more than 3,600 brands, generating 5.3 billion yuan in sales. Preliminary estimates suggest each yuan in coupons drove 5 yuan in consumer spending.
Following the wrap-up of the Shanghai Shopping Festival, the Shanghai Summer International Consumption Season will kick off in early July — bringing a new wave of summer-themed events, products and services to further stimulate the city's dynamic consumer market.
