Shanghai has launched a comprehensive action plan to accelerate the establishment of a product carbon footprint management system and promote green and low-carbon supply chains.

The initiative, in line with national and local directives for achieving carbon peak and neutrality, aims to enhance management standards for key product carbon footprints and facilitate the city's transition to a greener, more sustainable future, according to the Shanghai municipal government.

The plan outlines the construction of the product carbon footprint management system with a focus on enriching application scenarios and promoting green and low-carbon transformations in supply chain key areas through 20 specific tasks across four major aspects.

Emphasizing core principles such as innovation-driven, technology integration, government guidance, and market leadership, the plan aims to establish a system tailored to local and national conditions while aligning with international standards. The plan targets around 30 standards related to product carbon footprints and promoting over 50 leading enterprises in green and low-carbon supply chains by 2025.

By 2030, the plan aims to formulate approximately 100 standards related to product carbon footprints and establish a comprehensive platform system for product carbon footprint services, fostering a well-functioning, market-driven, green and low-carbon supply chain through collaborations with neighboring provinces in the Yangtze River Delta region.

The plan also advocates for the active participation of society in promoting the application of carbon labeling on consumer goods and encourages consumers to choose products with lower carbon footprints.

Additionally, the plan includes strategies to enhance green and low-carbon manufacturing, promote sustainable transportation methods, improve resource recycling, develop green electricity, and strengthen the research and application of green and low-carbon technologies in various supply chain segments.

The comprehensive action plan is supported by measures to enhance organizational coordination, policy support, capacity building, improved market mechanisms, and intellectual property rights protection.
