Hongkou originated its name from Hongkou Port, located in the northeast part of Shanghai city center. Key Development Areas

1. South Functional Area（the North Bund）
South Functional Area（the North Bund）is the core functional area for the construction of Shanghai International Shipping Center, was included into the CBD area of Shanghai, together with the Bund and Lujiazui area. It is also an important part of the Bund Financial Strip of Shanghai International Financial Center. South Functional Area（the North Bund）, targeting the urban central activity zone(CAZ), focusing on the development of high-end commercial business such as finance, shipping and so on, is integrated into the construction of “four Centers” in Shanghai. In the next five years, the South Functional Area（the North Bund）will basically complete the reconstruction of old districts, will add about 1.9 million square meters of commercial business vehicles, and will become an important functional area of Shanghai International Financial Center and International Shipping Center.
2. Middle Functional Area
Middle Functional Area，the fascination of Hongkou, is international cultural metropolis construction through making full use of its advantages in historical humanity and ecological water system，focusing on surrounding Hongkou Football Stadium，North Sichuan Road - Music Valley and Ruihong New City areas to strengthen the integration of elements and function improvement. 3. North Functional Area
North Functional Area，the vitality of Hongkou, has become another part of Shanghai S&T Innovation Center, helping to accelerate urban renewal, industrial upgrade and project implementation. SHIPPING SERVICE INDUSTRY
At present, there are over 4400 shipping service companies and over 35 shipping functional agenciesbeen registered in Hongkou District. It has made Hongkou become one of the most convergent areas of the national shipping companies, shipping functional agencies and elements. Costa Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Princess Cruises and other leading cruise companies in the world, Clarksons, Simpson Spence Young, Howe Robinson and other world-renowned shipping brokerage companies have settled in Hongkou. The first transaction of Shipping Price Index occurs in Hongkou -- the Shanghai mid and long-term shipping index transaction of export container and the transaction of China costal coal shipping index launched by Shanghai Shipping Freight Exchange co. fills the domestic market void of shipping index derivative products. North Bund was awarded as the 1st “Headquarters Base for Shipping Services” nationwide by the Ministry of Communications. The first pilot project of Non-car operating common carrier business is executed nationwide in North Bund. In the 13th Five-Year Plan period, Hongkou will be dedicated in constructing the headquarter base of North Bund shipping service based on the target of One Line, Two Circles and Four Centers. The industrial basis and commercial building facilities of the North Bund are fully considered to build the International Shipping Information & Communication Service Center, International Shipping Talent Service Center, International Shipping Finance Center and International Shipping Innovative Business Center.
FINANCIAL SERVICE INDUSTRY
The North Bund in Hongkou District can be considered as a treasure land for the development of Shanghai financial service industry, as the first securities exchange in the history of People’s Republic of China commenced its business in this area.
